Hello, my friend, and welcome back to the Modern Hairstylist podcast. So, you may have noticed, or y- I mean, I don't know how you would not have noticed, that we are in something that many have coined the attention economy, where we as human beings, our attention is very monetized. Um, many, many, many companies, smart companies, are using our attention to be able to make money, majoratively in digital spaces, right? Now, historically, this has been, like, with billboards or with ads or posters when you walk down the street, right?

But now that we're all on our phones and we all need the internet and we all sometimes even need social media to get our job done, to interact with others within our personal lives, to complete daily tasks, there are so many ways that we are inundated by influence and marketing and sales opportunities, right? And this is the way that Fortune 500 companies have truly built themselves up to where they are now, and as per usual, us as an industry are way behind the curve and we do not adapt as quickly as this world adapts in today's day and age, which is why it's my mission to help you adapt fast, be way ahead of the curve, and even be the top 1% of this industry that actually gives a shit and actually makes it that far, right? Because the majority of people who would never even think to listen to this podcast 'cause they just don't care about business, right, would never think about implementing these opportunities. But I know that you, my friend, I know that you are different.

I know that you actually give a shit and that you understand the importance of business and staying ahead of the curve in this industry, so I am really excited to share with you my tips and tricks for how you can stay ahead with email marketing. The beauty of email marketing is every single day between your client leaving you and coming back, right, your client is getting bombarded with all of that marketing, right? Whether it be from a box color company such as Madelynn Reid literally saying, like, "Hey, you don't have to spend a bunch of money at the salon anymore. We're gonna set you up with a custom consultation, make it super personalized to you, and we're gonna send you a box and all the instructions that you need so that way you don't have to spend money at the salon anymore," right?

Like, literally that's the advertising that they use. Or, it's an influencer saying, "Hey, this is how I do my own highlights at home for $10 using box color highlights from CVS," right? Whether it b- whatever it may be, your client is get- is getting those advertisements, right? They are targeted to those specific people, and these influencers or these companies are now becoming the authority in your client's eyes over you, right?

And that is because we aren't utilizing something such as email marketing to gain back our clients' attention and to reiterate ourselves as the expert and stay top of mind in between appointments to remind our clients why they chose us in the first place and why they should choose us again and again and again. So, we're gonna be talking about email marketing today. I'm gonna be talking about the power of it even more, um, and I, and I'm gonna be giving you five really effective, beautiful tips for how you can make email marketing an absolute game changer for you. And they're super simple things that will really, really be helpful, um, some mistakes, some things to avoid, and some things to absolutely do.

So, if you are ready to get into some email marketing with me, my friends, then let's get into it. Let's go . What's the tea, friend? My name's Hunter Donia, industry business educator for hairstylists, but my friends just call me Hunty.

Whether it be growing your clientele, making more money, or automating and streamlining your systems, in the next 20 minutes or so, you'll be hearing realistic, actionable strategies to create a beautiful career for yourself behind the chair. So if you're ready to get into it, welcome to the Modern Hairstylist podcast. Okay, so before I get into our five simple game-changing email marketing tips, I want you to go to hunterdonia.com/email.

All right? Hunterdonia.com/email. And there, you're gonna be able to download five email templates that have been massive game changers for my students.

Um, these are the same templates and email structures that have gotten my students massive sales just by using email marketing, okay? So if you go to hunterdonia.com/email, you can grab those five email templates for free right now. So go ahead, check those out, and they will be implementing a lot of the things that I talk about today and a lot of the theory that I teach my students within my programs.

I had one student get an extra $4,000 in one month on top of their service income, okay? So this is separate, passive income from email marketing within one month with the strategies that I teach within my programs. And here's the thing about email marketing. A lot of hairstylists will be like, "Okay, cool.

I have a Vagaro Email Marketing or I have Square Email Marketing or Gloss Geni- Genius Email Marketing, and I'll just use that." And I'm like, "No. That does not have the advanced capabilities to make it so email marketing is super personalized and beautiful and essential, and also really streamlined and easy for you." Because email marketing does not have to be hard, and it should be as automated as possible, and there, like, there are so many advanced, beautiful things that you can do with email marketing that I teach that can, that can really bring your shit to the next level and actually scale your business.

Today's episode, I'm just gonna be talking about five simple things that you can do, but if you really wanna take this shit seriously and if you really wanna tap into the potential that it has, you can look into my programs at hunterdonia.com. Right now at the time, Pre Visit Pathway is where I teach a lot of this stuff and help you set up a proper email marketing software, and using a proper email marketing software, one that its- its sole purpose and job is to send emails, right, versus a booking software that just throws it in there, right? When you use one like that, that's when you can make a beautiful shit happen.

So if you wanna take that shit seriously, I'm here to help you figure that out. Okay, so let's get into five simple game-changing email marketing tips after you go to hunterdonia.com/email and you get those five awesome templates. So number one is use your social media posts as base content.

So a lot of people are like, "Okay, like, what do I actually send to my clients," right? Like, like, "Should I even send anything to them if it's not an announcement or if it's not something important?" Yeah, you absolutely should. You should send something that I like to call nurturing content, right, nurturing email content in between visits.

Now this could go to all of your clients across the board maybe on a monthly basis or a biweekly basis. And that way, you can consistently stay top of mind, right? You can stand yourself out from all of the attention economy bombardment, and you can al- always show up for your client, whether your client is coming back to see you in four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks, whatever it may be. And using your social media posts as a base content inspiration for your emails makes it so coming up with that content for your email marketing is a lot easier, right?

So let's say that you posted a video tutorial of how to curl your hair on your Instagram, right? You could make that an entire email. You could make an entire email about that. You could be like, "Hey.

Don't know if you saw this, but here, uh, he- I- this week, I posted a video on how you can curl your hair in these five simple steps." Or you could introduce something such as, like, the subject line could be, "How to Curl Your Hair in Less Than Five Minutes." And then you could s- you could start off the email, and you could say something like, "Hey. I totally get that curling your hair may seem really daunting, and you may have tried and failed before.

Here are five tips for how you can make your- curling your hair that much easier." List out all the five, and then you can say, "And by the way, I have a social media post that I just posted this past week with a video tutorial for how you can implement these five steps, and you can follow me step by step." Right? And so this way, you ha- you're- you're easily coming up with a piece of content, because you already had to come up with- with it for your social media, so you might as well repurpose that into an email.

You're pushing your client to not only read your email and get reminded of how awesome you are with the email, but then furthermore, pushing them to your social media and getting more engagement on your social media as well too. So you're keeping that person within your atmosphere. You're rotating them through different types of content and consis- and- and- and fully, to the best of your ability, grabbing that person's attention and establishing yourself as the expert, and offering value in between the appointments, right? And emails such as that, value emails, are gonna make your client wanna actually open up the email, right?

It's gonna make somebody expect and get excited for the emails in the future, and it's also going to make them trust you more and more and more. Right? So using your social media posts, because you should already be posting things on your social media on a consistent basis that are helpful and valuable, or informational, whatever it may be, using that and then translating it into an email, and then just using that as the call to action can be a really cool way to come up with content for your email that is just nurturing in between the appointments. Not, because normally we only look at email marketing as, for, like, things such as, like, "Oh, I have openings," or, "Oh, here's a price increase," or, "Oh, I'm changing my schedule.

I'm going on vacation. Uh, this is a holiday sale." A lot of that informational bullshit is things that- that people just do not want to open up. And when you can get your client on a routine of opening up your emails and expecting something fun, that's when you can get somebody to actually open up and read them and care about them.

Also, when you give something super valuable and informational, such as, like, that cur- how to curl your hair, here are five simple steps that will help you, right? And then you call to action something such as, let's say, um, "I have openings if you wanna get in with me," it's gonna make somebody so much more engaged and actually want to go ahead and take up one of those appointments, right? Because it was a much more fun email to read. So using your social media posts as base content for your content for your emails is a very helpful tip.

My second tip that I have for you is focus on the subject line. Very hard. I want you to o- I, yes, normally I tell you don't overthink, done is better than perfect. In this circumstance, I'm gonna tell you overthink the subject line.

Okay? Because if your subject line isn't good enough, if it isn't hooking the person and making them want to read more, then they are never gonna open up the email, and then everything goes to waste, right? You could have written the most amazing email, had the most amazing content within that email, but if the subject line wasn't good, right, or it someth- it didn't grab somebody's attention to want to actually open and read the email, then nobody's ever gonna see that content, right? So your subject line is going to be the biggest game changer when it comes to your open rate, right?

And you should have an email marketing software that shows you your open rate. It shows you your click rate. Um, and it tells you specifically what clients opened that a- a- and how long they stay on there, what they click, et cetera, et cetera. And your open rate is super important to keep as high as possible, because you want everybody, as much as possible, to open up your email.

The subject line is where it's at, and you wanna think about a subject line the same way that we think about a hook in a social media caption. I know damn well you've heard of a hook before in a social media caption, right? The first line of the copy in a caption should be something that makes the reader want to continue reading. Same goes for your s- for your subject line.

And a hot tip. You can use, in proper email marketing softwares, you can use, um, your, uh, a personalization liquid code to make it so that person's first name shows up in a subject line. So let's say that you were gonna send an email with tips about how to make your hair stronger. Okay?

And let's say that your subject line was something like, "Your hair may be fragile..." Right? Super ominous, super creepy. I would definitely wanna open up that email and be like, "Wait, what do you mean my hair's gonna be fragile?"

Right? You could personalize it and make it even more likely to be opened by adding my first name into it. So let's say you were gonna send an email to me that said, "Your hair may be fragile." The subject line with personalization code using an email marketing software, a proper email marketing software, could say something like this.

"Your hair is fragile, insert name here." So that would say Hunter if you were sending that email to me. So then in the subject line, my name is literally right there, and that's gonna grab my attention a lot more, right? So adding people's names to the subject line using personalization code within proper email marketing softwares can really increase your open rate as well.

So make sure that your subject lines are juicy, they're exciting. You can also use preview text as well too if you're using, if you're using a proper email marketing software. The preview text is, like, the little amount of text that gives you an idea of what's actually in the email below it. That can be customized to even furthermore get a second chance of grabbing that person's attention as well too.

So the preview text is really powerful and something you should also focus on as well as your subject line. My next tip is making sure your sender name is clear, and this is another thing that you lose control of if you're just using your booking software as email marketing software. You lose control of being able to choose your sender name.A sender name is super important because right above that subject line, it's actually gonna tell the person, your client, who the- who is actually sending this email.

And if that person doesn't immediately recognize 'cause you have, like, .5 seconds to get somebody's attention with an email, right? If that person doesn't immediately recognize that sender name, they're just gonna delete the email, right? And this could be a whole conversation within itself, but a lot of the times people will name their s- their salon suites, right, a different name, or name their brand a different name, which is fine and dandy, but oftentimes, when your client is referencing you or thinking about you or when they would normally recognize that it's you, they're just thinking about your name, right?

So instead of your salon suite name or whatever else it may be, if you're an independent stylist who is sending out an email, you want your sender name to be your name because that is what your client is going to recognize first and foremost. The next tip I have for you, and this is really, really helpful for making it so your clients are actually reading your emails and enjoy getting your emails, is the 80/20 rule. Now, when I say 80/20 rule, I mean I want 80% of your content to be valuable, educational, inspirational, nurturing, et cetera, et cetera, things that people are actually going to be excited to read. And then 20% of it can be more direct to sale, informational, book with me now, here are available appointments, et cetera, et cetera.

This is what's going to make somebody actually want to open up that email and expect emails from you in the future and actually get excited to read them, and actually be more engaged and ready to hit that call to action button. So whether that be 80/20 as far as the content in one email goes, right? So one email, 80% of it is valuable and 20% of it is more of a call to action. Or the major- like, your overall emails that you send, 80% of all of the emails that you send are more nur- nurturing, and then every now and then, you have, like, a straight call to action informational one, right?

Either way, bo- the rule applies in both of those ways. And this is going to make it so your client actually enjoys those emails, they continue to open them up, and they're actually more likely to take action because you're not just throwing offers at them. You're getting them excited and engaged and nurtured, and then giving them the call to action. Okay, last but not least is legibility and clearness over graphics, and also deliverability over graphics and prettiness.

So what I see often is people get really tripped up or obsessed with their emails looking pretty. And yes, there actually is value to your email looking aesthetically pleasing, that there is something to that. However, I want you to make sure that you're not using a shit ton of pictures or visuals or graphics in your email just to make it so your email is pretty. I especially don't really want you to screw around with font colors or background colors too much, because they can translate really weirdly on certain devices.

Uh, the more graphics there are, the more likely you're gonna end up in spam. So I want you to make sure that you're prioritizing the clearness and the deliverability over it actually looking pretty. Doesn't matter how pretty your email is if it never actually shows up in your client's inbox, or if they open it up in their personal device and the app they're using somehow translates that into an illegible thing, um, or a difficult to read thing. So just make sure that you're alw- always testing your emails, right?

Um, with whatever software you're using, you should be able to very much test your email, and you should be able to send that to yourself and preview it before you actually see what it's- before you actually send it off to all of your clients. Make sure you're always testing it and make sure that you're not getting too tripped up over whether it looks pretty or not. Make sure that it's just clear and easy and clean. Yes, make it aesthetically pleasing and branded, but not crazy, overly branded.

All right, my friend. I told you this- these were gonna be simple game-changing email marketing tips. These truly are very simple, but massively powerful things that can truly be a game changer for you. If you wanna lean into more advanced email marketing, uh, strategies, then I highly recommend that you check out my programs at hunterdoniell.
