In this episode of The Modern Hairstylist Podcast, host Hunter Donia and guest Jodie Brown share three fast actions to break out of burnout, fear, and creative paralysis. This is not a pep talk. It is a simple plan you can use the next time you feel stuck and need momentum.
Whether you feel weighed down by the world, uninspired by your day to day, or frozen by overthinking, you will learn how to spark dopamine with a just for fun business project, make an impact that reconnects you to your why, and schedule productive self care that clears friction so you can move again.
Key Takeaways:
🎨 Do one joyful business project now
Play with a hair model or build a brand guidelines packet purely for fun. Do not judge it. The goal is to wake up creativity and make work feel lighter again.
🤝 Use your platform for good
Run a raffle for a cause or set a quarterly nomination where a client’s friend receives a free service. Small impact projects rebuild purpose and gratitude.
🧹 Choose productive self care
Clear the clutter that drags on your focus. Purge and reset your space at home or in your suite so you start the day with energy instead of noise.
🗓 Refill then redirect
Commit to one non business activity that genuinely recharges you. Put it on the calendar and use the refreshed energy for one concrete next step.
🚀 Action beats anxiety
When you feel the smallest spark, pick one of these moves and do it. If nothing changes, nothing changes.

Hello, my friend. Welcome back to the Modern Hairstylers podcast. I had a student get on a one-to-one coaching call with me a couple weeks ago that really challenged me a little bit, and forced me to come up with some interesting innovative concepts and tangible things that we can do to get out of burnout, not being inspired, being kind of paralyzed in not taking action, right? Or paralyzed in fear.
Because we're in a crazy time in the world right now. It's really hard to wake up, see what's happening, and then just go on about your day like everything's normal, right? And that could be because of what's happening in your own life, what you're personally struggling with, or just how you're seeing the world, and you may feel completely doomsday, doomful, you know, catastrophizing, and just hopeless. And one of the things that I think is so important that we have to have in business and in our lives is hope.
If there's anything that the evil forces out there don't want you to have is hope. If there's anything that the negative, terrible part of your brain that wants you to fail and stay safe, if they ... What, what that part of your brain wants you to do is have no hope. They want you to stay right where you are, right?
So today, I'm gonna give you some tangible steps that can hopefully reactivate the creative part of your brain, the hopeful part of your brain, the exciting part of your brain, to make it so that business feels a little bit lighter and more exciting, and then hopefully makes the non-sexy stuff that we don't love doing a little bit easier. Okay? How does that sound, Jodi Brown? I love that.
I think that sometimes just getting in motion is so powerful, and so I'm really excited to get into these tangible kinda steps that you can take. Me too. I'm not giving you a pep talk here today, friend. Like, I'm just giving you the steps.
And you know what? Full transparency. I am just some- I like action, and it's how I get myself out of all the time. Like, if nothing changes, nothing changes.
Like, you could sit around and you could be like, like sad and paralyzed or whatever it may be, but if you don't do anything, then nothing will change. So validating your feelings here, 'cause it's real, right? Like, it's real and it's hard to get up and do things, 100%. Okay?
But when you have just the glimpse of energy or motivation, the next time that you do, do one of these things. Okay? So this person came on this call, was just feeling blah, frozen. I was like, okay, we need to do like a little reset situation, so I gave her three activities to do, and I want you to do one or two or three of these.
Okay? The first thing was I want you to do something that is business related, but I want you to do it in a non-strategic way. Okay? So I want you to take a hair model and just have fun with the hair model.
Don't think about all the photos that you're gonna get from it, the content that you're gonna get from it, the agreements that you're gonna have, if this is gonna be profitable or not. Just do hair that you love. I want you to make a brand guidelines packet without thinking about the strategy of it. Does this fit my ideal client?
D- Do these brand colors go together? Does this, does this ... Is this gonna make me money? Just make a brand packet that's fun, that's exciting and cool.
Throw random Canva elements all over it that just make you happy. Like, what makes you happy? Think about your own life and what makes you happy, roll that into something that's business related, one project or another, without thinking strategically or about the risks or if it's perfect or not. Give yourself some permission to have fun in your business, because it can really inspire you to do more work, and it could even end up being strategic for you without you expecting it to be or non-purposefully, right?
So lean into who you are and what makes you happy and just do something that's fun, 'cause then it'll create some dopamine release and then it'll connect it to your business in one way or another and hopefully make the other things that you do in your business a little bit more easier or more, uh, less painful to confront, I guess you could say. Right. Right. The second thing I'm gonna recommend that you do is recognize that th- the leverage that you may have with your business, and, and, and do something impactful with it.
Okay? So what this may look like, and I've talked about this idea a little bit in the podcast recently-ish, this may look like you doing a raffle basket and 100% of the proceeds go to a charity or organization or project that you care about, right? 'Cause still it's in your business, but you're able to recognize your why, right? And the impact that you get to make in your community, right?
Which is really cool, and it makes you grateful and feel privileged to have that space and be able to do those things. Um, what this person actually did was they decided, on a quarterly basis, they're gonna have a nomination of somebody who, quote-unquote, deserves to get their hair done for free. So their clients are gonna, like, apply to, like, nominate one of their friends or something like that to get their hair done for free. Maybe they're going through a hard time, whatever it may be, they're gonna get their hair done for free on a quarterly basis.
So that's something that she was like, "I can make an impact in this way, it can make me feel really good," whatever it may be, and it's still business related, right? And it's not, and it's not necessarily strategic, but again, it can end up being beneficial for your business and the perspec- perspective of your business, but also for your mindset as well too, which is really important, and the first and foremost priority here, right?I really love this one too, because I think, like, sometimes that burnt out, overwhelmed feeling can lead you to feeling a little bit, like, powerless, I want to say. And making an impact in this way and actually, like, seeing what you can do, I think is a really, really powerful thing.
Yeah, dude. I mean, what we get to do every single day is so powerful within itself. We just don't take time to actually reflect and see it, right? So true.
I could go on a whole ... It could be a whole episode about that, dude. Like, I, that's why I love this industry so much. So, an activity like this can really help you recognize that.
And whether that just be- Yeah. the amount of people that you have access to, that respect you, that will listen to you, that want to be a part of something with you, right? Just recognizing that, or just the direct impact that you're making, or you can make in another human being, I think is so cool. My last thing that I'm gonna share with you is commit to doing something that you will do for yourself that is non-business related, okay?
So, this could be very small. This could be, "I'm going to go for a walk in my favorite park. I'm gonna take a day trip to this place." Or, "I'm going to sit down and I'm going to do something."
Do something for yourself and commit to it, and make it like a blocked out part of your calendar. Something that will rejuvenate you, reenergize you, and hopefully, what I would encourage you to do is commit to yourself that after you've done that, that you will feel recharged and that you will take some time to then use that energy productively in one way or another. And this brings me back to, I talked about this concept a long time ago. During the pandemic I brought this up, and I kind of, like, thought about this concept, where there is, like, productive self-care and then there's just kind of, like, indulgent self-care, where, like, productive self-care is doing, like, hard things that are good for you.
Where, like, indulgent self-care is doing easy things that are not necessarily good or bad for you, but aren't actually moving you forward to longer term sustainable happiness. You know what I mean? Right. So, like, indulgent self-care is, like, getting a massage.
Like, it's like getting ... It's, it's, it's watching Netflix and not doing anything on the couch for a day. Where, like, productive self-care- Right. is, like, getting done, like, the little stupid shit that, like, is on your to-do list that you maybe otherwise n- would not put aside time to do.
I mean, for example, for me, like, I felt really burnt out recently after coming back from a ton of travel. And something that has been like a mosquito in my ear for, like, I swear, like, a year at this point, was I wanted to purge the shit out of my house. Like, I wanted to throw away and donate so much shit and, like, reorganize stuff. And can I tell you, I feel so much better.
Like, I can't ... I, I ... It's so strange, like, how much better I feel like waking up- Yeah. in the morning.
'Cause I work from home, right? So, like, waking up in the morning and, like, being in this environment, it just, it just feels so much more fresh and good. And I can go into my work with a much more positive and fresh perspective. Maybe the environment for you that you need to do that in is your salon suite.
Like, maybe you gotta reorganize. Maybe there's some shit that's just, like, piling up and you're just letting it go because you're so tired, 'cause you're so burnt out. Spend some time, maybe, committing to just purging that shit out, because you will feel so much better after. Something like that, right?
That's just an example. I'm not saying- Yeah. that you do that. But that's an example of something that you may do.
Something that's, like, weighing you down in the background of your brain that you may not realize, like, get that shit off of your plate. Yeah. So, those are my tangible tips for you, my friend. And you're already tired and burnt out, so I'm gonna keep this one a short one, and I'm gonna say just go do those things.
Like, take some action right now and do those things. I don't need to rant to you for another 10 minutes, girl. Just go and do it, all right? So, hopefully you understand that you're not alone in feeling this way sometimes, especially with how the world is right now.
Like, things are hard. Things are scary. It's difficult for me to get up and do the things that I need to fucking do. It's difficult for me to navigate the things that are going on right now, especially as a business owner.
You're not alone and everybody is feeling it. But, at the end of the day, if you don't have hope, if you don't have something that you're doing for yourself to make it so you can continue forward, then there's nothing that's ever gonna change about your circumstance or the impact that you can make in the circumstance of the world, right? 'Cause if you don't show up, who the fuck else is gonna show up? Like, nobody's coming to save you.
Mm-hmm. And you can't save anybody else if you're not saving yourself first. So, so much love to you. Go kick some ass, 'cause you're fricking cool and amazing and you deserve it.
Thank you for tuning into the Modern Hairstylers podcast. Peace out, girl scout. Bye-bye.
