How To Personalize Your Automations

About this episode

In this episode of The Modern Hairstylist Podcast, Hunter Donia and Jodie Brown dig into a concept Hunter has been teaching since the very beginning of his career as an educator: how to use automation and technology not to replace the human touch in your business, but to amplify it. This episode sets the stage for a deeper dive into specific examples coming in the next episode, and it makes the case for why embracing AI is not a luxury for the modern stylist. It is a competitive necessity.

Hunter gets candid about why the friction of doing things manually is not noble, it is just holding you back from serving your clients at the highest level possible. Whether you are neurodivergent, overwhelmed, or just stretched too thin as a business owner, this episode reframes what it actually means to go above and beyond for your clients in 2026.

Key Takeaways:

🤖 AI Is Not Here To Replace You, It Is Here To Multiply You: Hunter opens by addressing the fear head on. The real opportunity with AI is not eliminating labor, it is removing the bottlenecks that prevent you from showing up consistently and at your best for every single client. Two things can be true at once: you can automate more and personalize more at the same time.

🧠 Removing Friction Is Not Laziness, It Is Strategy: Hunter pushes back on the idea that doing things manually makes you a better service provider. If removing friction through automation means your clients consistently receive a more thoughtful, personalized, and higher quality experience than they would get if you were doing it all by hand, then the automation is the more caring choice.

🎯 Personalization Used To Be The Bottleneck: Jodie names exactly what has changed. Before AI, personalization required you to manually input, remember, and execute every detail. Now AI handles the parts of that process that were draining your time and mental bandwidth, so the personalized experience actually gets delivered instead of falling through the cracks when life gets busy.

📋 In Chair, Pre Visit, And Post Visit All Get An Upgrade: Hunter makes clear this is not just about automated emails and booking confirmations. The AI consultation notetaker he references is a real tool his students are using right now to capture what was discussed, log personal details, and prep Hunter for the next appointment, so every client feels remembered, known, and taken care of.

🚀 The Stylists Implementing This Are Breaking Through: Hunter is direct that the stylists who are building above average businesses are the ones willing to get uncomfortable and embrace modern tools. The ones who resist are staying stuck at average. The gap between those two groups is widening.

Why You Should Listen: If you have ever told yourself that doing things by hand means you care more about your clients, this episode will challenge that directly. Hunter makes a compelling and practical case for why the most personalized, high ticket client experiences being delivered right now are the ones powered by smart automation, and why getting on board is the move that sets you apart from every other stylist in your market.

So right now, with all the talks of AI and all the things, right? A big sentiment is, is AI going to replace labor? Right? And quite honestly, I mean, if we're being so for real, all the corporations, all business owners, if they can replace labor, it increases their profit, right?

That is really exciting to a lot of companies. I think that there is, of course, corporations out there that are thinking how we can, how, thinking about how they can do that. I think whether that is the T or not, I think that also thinking about how you can make things more efficient to get things done faster, to be able to do more things that you don't have the time to do normally, that will increase your effort and your performance as a business, is a very powerful way of thinking. I think it's actually a little bit more applicable when it comes to these tools, especially from our perspective in this industry, and being able to do the things that you would like to do even better than if you did not have AI, right?

I think that that is a really beautiful approach in how I am really thinking about how I'm implementing AI in my own business and how I'm teaching these people to put AI into their businesses. Because I think that completely replacing labor is kind of like a lack mindset. I think, like, if you have another human who can use this tool very well, or if you can free up another human's bullshit tasks that takes them a bunch of time, then that human can spend time on the things that require a human that they would otherwise not have the time to do or not do as well or maximally. And so when we talk about the client experience, what we're able to do with AI is create so much more personalization, create such a more next level experience from the beginning all the way through to infinity when it comes to how you're serving the client, how you're communicating with them, and it's not about replacing you.

It's about making it so the menial tasks that are there, or even the powerful tasks that are there, are either, are either delegated, so that way you can spend more time doing the important things, or they are maximized to a higher level, a faster and more efficient level, so you can really set yourself apart and stand out from the competition and create a high-ticket service that is perceived that way. Did I spill the tea or no? Yes, I love that. So basically, what we're gonna talk about today is how you can utilize AI to amplify and personalize the client experience even further.

So the things that AI has made possible that would've been really labor intensive or, you know, potentially, like, you wouldn't do 'cause you were tired five years ago. Yeah. I, I think I've been teaching, like, a version of this in one way or another for so long. Like, from the very beginning, like, I've always taught, like, how can we automate things, but still implement a ton more personalization into it?

Like, I wanted to figure out, like, of course, how can we save time, yes, but how can we do more without adding more labor? And so, because, I mean, it's like, we wanna go above and beyond, but how much time and energy do we have in our brain, or even discipline, to be able to do this stuff? And so what I've always done is create systems that stylists can use to create that personalized experience, go above and beyond, but it took so much work- it took, it took a lot of workarounds, you know? And the beautiful thing about this AI is that it can, it can do some of that thinking that may have required a little bit more of your manual labor still for you, so you can really take a step back.

And I think that that's a really beautiful way to use it, you know, to create that personalized experience as much as possible, because otherwise, you still have to fill in some of the gaps at least, or you have to go, uh, really, like, around things and, like, put things in, in place that are not a good direct, clear way of making it happen from an automation perspective. Right. So essentially, it's like the personalization before a lot of this could almost end up being the bottleneck in certain ways. Like, it's, like, waiting on you to- Exactly ...

do the thing and input the thing, and now with the advent of AI and, like, how accessible it's become, that's the part that you can get a little bit more hands-off. Is that, is that kind of what you're saying? 100%. And like, it's like, it's, again, it's like things where, you know, it's w- waiting on you to click a button, right?

It's like, we've streamlined it as much as we possibly can while making sure there's still control, and it still, like, makes sense, and it's still personalized. But at this point, like, I mean, and the majority of stylists aren't even there yet, you know? Like, a lot of the people listening to this probably aren't even there yet, you know? Like, they're not even at that point where they can just click a button and then create this, like, insanely personalized experience for people or just put in a couple words and then, like, have a bunch of automated flows go out, right?

Like, we're not, a lot of people aren't even there yet, right? But adding AI into the mix, it really removes any sort of that friction. It removes any sort of, like, further, uh, discipline or organization to remember to even show up and click the button, you know? Like, like, it's...

And, and, you know, here's what I'm gonna say. I've been thinking about this recently, where a lot of people who have, like, think pieces about AI and think about how, or even just about technology, and they'll say something like, "I feel like there's no friction in life. Like, why does everything have to be more and more convenient for everybody?" You know?

Like, it's like, "Why does everybody have to have, like, the next gadget or whatever? Like, when you completely remove friction from, like, the life experience, then you're removing, like, what humans were meant to go through or whatever, and that creates, like, poor life experiences, and you don't learn from that." And I think that's, like, such an ableist viewpoint- I think it is so not modern and relevant and, and, and considerate of, like, what life looks in, like, in today's day and age. Like, yes, the technology makes things more convenient, everything is more smooth, and do I think there's a part of that that is not really that healthy for the brain?

Of course. Do I think that not only does this technology and convenience increase and humans want more of it, but simultaneously, life is harder, life is more difficult. It is so much harder for us to show up and h- and even to, to handle that friction without breaking down on a consistent basis. And especially as a neurodivergent human being, especially as a business owner, like, I think it is so important that we are comfortable with embracing this stuff and being okay with the fact that I need handicaps as much as I possibly can in order for me to live a happy, healthy life, and to show up and have the things in my business done consistently that I would like to be done, right?

I mean, even medication, for example. This is a great example of this. It's like, it's ... People talk about how, like, uh, you know, of course we would rather not take the medication.

Like, we would so much rather not have to deal with the side effects of the medication, taking medication long-term, uh, for it to affect certain person- like, personality traits or whatever it may be. But is it, is that better than the opposite where it's you're off the medication and you have a higher likelihood of getting into shitty things and having a terrible life and really bad mental health? 100%. So then why are we bastardizing the medicine, right?

Like, we should allow people to embrace this stuff to be able to serve your clients better, to serve yourself better, and to be able to just, at bare minimum, keep up with the pace of life that's out there, especially as business owners. Like, you ... We are in a rat race all the time now, and we already as h- especially hairstylists, beauty entrepreneurs, with so much labor to be done with entire lives, we are high achievers and we want to tap into the potential that this business has for us, but it requires above average work. And to be able to fulfill that above average work with automation, with this tool such as AI, and go above and beyond, I think is very powerful and should not be thrown to the wayside just because you think that you're taking better care of your clients by doing things manually, having all this friction.

It's this concierge experience. It's like you're actually holding yourself back from serving your clients 10,000 times better because of how much more you could do if there was more hands in the business, whether it be a robot or not. Right. Well, and I feel like that's kind of aligned with what you have been teaching the whole time, right?

Is that if you can find ways to systematize the parts of your business that are draining, then you can more consistently show up in those ways for your clients, right? So it's almost like, I think almost it's counterintuitive that automations would give you more personalized service, but that definitely is super aligned with what you've been teaching this whole time. Period. It's like you can have, again, it's like two things can be true.

Like, you can automate and take things away from your labor, and you can, while you're doing that, you can make the client experience even better, you know? Like, that's always been, always been the, uh, the approach from the very beginning. So the way that me and my students are implementing this shit is just, like, making the client experience, like, that much cooler, you know? Actually creating, like, real results.

Things are being done better. You know, I mean, I, we, we released an episode I think not too long ago where we talked about, like, a, a ... I just gave you all a bullet list of these examples. I mean, it's next level shit, you know?

It's, like, very cool. It's like, what other stylist is doing this? And these are the stylists that do break through the average. They are living not average lives because they're doing things that are not average, right?

Like, they are, they are able to create the wealth that they're able to create in their career because they are willing to implement this stuff that a lot of people just don't pay attention to or don't care about or are unwilling to get uncomfortable to embrace. I mean, I just saw recently somebody who's been in our program for a while, actually. She just posted a, uh, in our group and was like, "I am so fed up with fighting this stuff. I'm gonna finally embrace it."

And it's just so exciting to see. I even just em- onboarded, like, a mastermind person who has no automation or tech stuff in place, but she's created this awesome business for herself. And I'm like, "Oh my God, you're handling this shit manually, dude?" Right.

Like, I can't ... I am so excited to tap into what's possible for you and how much better you're gonna be able to serve your clients and also serve yourself. Like, if you've already created this much success, imagine how much more success that you can have when it's compounded by the possibilities with modern technology. Love that.

Yeah. That's- I also think, too, that with the implementation of AI, it also does make getting into tech and, uh, implementing tech a little bit more accessible as well, too. I, I think that it, it removes a little bit of the, of the manual setup and the blocks that it takes to be able to actually h- uh, create a digital experience. And by the way, I'm not just talking about, like, pre-visit and post-visit stuff.

Like, we're implementing stuff with AI that, like, that is in the chair, like, tangible experience that really supports you in serving this person even better, such as, like, our AI, uh, note-taker. Our AI consultation note-taker, right? Like, that is, like, going to allow you to very easily pay full attention to the client without a distraction of trying to take notes or remember things, right? Takes away that stress, and in the moment, you're able to serve them better because you have clear understanding of what you guys talked about last time.

You're able to touch on personal notes to strengthen the relationship. You're gonna make somebody feel like you actually care about them, because you're actually, like, doing a diligent job of wanting to make sure that you know who this person is, what you did last time, what you talked about, what you ... uh, and what you talked about was going to happen this appointment. That is an example of, like, using this technology to do things only better, and what we're really focused on over here is creating those, like, that, that technology and tho- those solutions so you can implement it very easily.

And I think that that's also the beauty of it as well. I think people who maybe worked with me six years ago, where I'd give you a tutorial for how to connect this form to this automation platform to this and that and the third, I think that they would be very shocked to see how much easier it has become over the years as technology has gotten better and especially as AI has stepped into the scene. Yeah, 100%. And we talk about this all the time, where it's like you love tech.

I am someone who does not love tech, but I love what tech does for my business and what it makes possible for me. And I think that it's now just gone to the next level. And I think you said before, it's like you're able to do more with less, so you're making ... You know, I think when we think about AI, we d- like, a lot of us still think about, like, chatbot conversations, and, like, the things that it has made possible now are so far beyond that, and it is really making, creating these excellent experiences so much more upgraded, so much more accessible for people.

So I'm obviously hopefully getting the message across that, like, this technology is available to you, and it can be really powerful if you actually implement it. In the next episode, we're gonna be talking about the specific examples, some more specific examples of how this actually can make your client experience way better and way stronger without you doing a lot more work. So make sure to look out for that one. Subscribe to the podcast.
